Day 1, Thursday, August 27
A private coach will meet you at Malpensa Airport – it is scheduled to coincide with the arrivals of Norwegian and SAS respectively. The coach will depart from the airport around 14.00. A pleasant drive takes you through Lombardia into Piemonte – to Asti. Here you check into Cascina Desderi, wonderfully located on a hilltop just outside the wine capital of Asti. The farm offers sweeping vistas of mountains, valleys and vineyards. An arrival snack with Desderi wines is served this afternoon.
Enjoy the lush surroundings; the garden, terraces and the pool. This evening, a Welcome to Desderi-dinner is served under the portico – all dishes accompanied by the farm’s own wines – last, but not least; Odd Riisnæs’ playing old Italian classics.
Arrival snack & Welcome dinner
Day 2, Friday, August 28
Today offers an excursion in the region of Piemonte “a journey in the realm of Wine and Savoia”. First we cross through Asti from east to west. On small country roads we drive alongside the river Po, through rolling hills and rustic villages towards Torino. This majestic city is the former capital of Italia – from where the Savoia dynasty ruled Italia for hundreds of years.
The mountain range Alpes Maritimes is visible west of the city, while the summit of Superga is towering above the city center. The summit offers fantastic vistas of Torino. We pay a visit to the chapel and its famous bar (!) – this is also holy ground for the Savoia family as most of their royal ancestors have their sepulchres here.
After a refreshment in the «Chapel Bar» we enter the opulent little church. Here Odd has prepared a sacral concert under the baroque vaults (all depending on Trond having been able to get the permission, if not, the concert will be held elsewhere, a concert, however, it will be). From the summit of Superga, we start our descent to Torino. We cross the Po River – and drive along the embankments to the elegant centro of the city, to “Via Roma”. From here most major sights are within walking distance: Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Madama and the famous Torino Duomo. Lunch is served in one of the sophisticated arcades, in a restaurant appropriately called Ristorante Arcadia. Time for shopping along Via Roma after lunch, then we return to Cascina Desderi. As the lunch today is a sumptuous one, no dinner is planned for this evening.
Breakfast & Lunch
Day 3, Saturday, August 29
Today is a free day to enjoy – a day for Carpe Diem. After a long and comfortable breakfast, make your plans for the day. A trip to Asti is highly recommended – a market town with a quaint old town with interesting sights and museums. The pedestrian street, Corso Alfieri, offers elegant shopping with a variety of stores. As this is a Saturday, there is a market in town – a real “flying circus”. Here you find everything from tractor wheels to erotic underwear, from vines to wines and most important of all; a ham and cheese market. A pizza lunch at one of the many piazzerie is the perfect place to see – and be seen, and of course enjoy a genuine Italian pizza. But do not make the lunch too sumptuous! In the late afternoon, meet Trond for a guided tour of Asti Cathedral and a walk through the Old Town. This Saturday evening, a special Wine maker’s dinner has been planned. This will be a memorable dinner, with memorable wines as the chef will match each dish with a Desderi wine, and for the main dish he will find a vintage Barbera from the private cantina. The composer of the day is Ennio Morricone as Odd will play the Master’s music – a career that spans almost 90 years – from such films as the Mission, Cinema Paradiso and for the numerous Spaghetti Westerns with Sergio Leone.
Breakfast & Wine Maker’s Dinner
Day 4, Sunday, August 30
This Sunday morning, we head for the coast – the beautiful coast of Liguria, stretching from Genova to Porto Fino. We take the autostrada to Genova. Here we stroll around the city on a guided walking tour of the old town. We continue south on winding roads out of Genova to Nervi. Here we enjoy lunch on a cliff stretching into the Mediterranean, at the seafood Ristorante Olivé with unsurpassed vistas of the ocean the Portofino peninsula and the Ligurian coastline. The catch of the day is a real Frutti di Mare, accompanied by white and rose’ wines from Cascina Desderi. Before turning north towards Piemonte, we follow the coastal road towards Rapallo, before hitting the autostrada to drive back to the farm. A light farewell dinner is served this evening, accompanied by tunes from Nino Rota – for sure the themes from the films; the Leopard and the Godfather will be part of the repertoire.
